Strip, sand, and stain — so the wood breathes and the color holds.
What's included
What's included
Exterior wood lives or dies by prep. We never stain over old, failing coatings.
- 01Wash and strip existing stain or sealer
- 02Brighten the wood with oxalic acid
- 03Sand and feather rough boards
- 04Replace obvious failed fasteners or boards
- 05Two coats of penetrating oil or hybrid stain
Pricing logic
How we price it
Square footage matters, but board condition is the bigger lever.
Board condition
Greyed-out cedar takes longer to brighten than year-old wood.
Railings and balusters
Spindles are slow brushwork. They almost always cost more than the deck floor.
Product choice
Penetrating oils last 2–3 years; hybrid solid-color stains push 5–7 years.
Access
Roof decks and second-story balconies need rigging, not just ladders.
